چکیده

A freshwater population of magnetotactic bacteria has been extracted from the Seine River (France) and studied using transmission electron microscopy. Seventeen different morphotypes were recognized using morphological criteria, which rely on the number of magnetite crystals and their organization within cells, the size and shape of the cells and their statistical distribution. This study revealed new features in some magnetotactic bacteria that have not been described in the literature. In addition X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron diffraction analyses revealed cells containing Ba-rich and CaO inclusions. Two major modes of magnetite crystals growth were derived from the distributions of the crystal shapes in this population. Numerous cases of crystals elongations along axes different from the [111] axis are related to one singular process of crystal growth. Thus, this population of magnetites collected from cells extracted from the Seine River does not meet some of the criteria for biogenicity, which have been used so far for biomagnetites, particularly those concerning the [111]

Elongated prismatic magnetite crystals in ALH84001 carbonate globules: potential Martian magnetofossils.

Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have analyzed magnetite (Fe3O4) crystals acid-extracted from carbonate globules in Martian meteorite ALH84001. We studied 594 magnetites from ALH84001 and grouped them into three populations on the basis of morphology: 389 were irregularly shaped, 164 were elongated prisms, and 41 were whisker-like. As a possible terrestrial analog for the ALH840...

Ferromagnetic resonance and low-temperature magnetic tests for biogenic magnetite

Magnetite is both a common inorganic rock-forming mineral and a biogenic product formed by a diversity of organisms. Magnetotactic bacteria produce intracellular magnetites of high purity and crystallinity (magnetosomes) arranged in linear chains of crystals. Magnetosomes and their fossils (magnetofossils) have been identified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in sediments dating bac...

Single-Cell Resolution of Uncultured Magnetotactic Bacteria via Fluorescence-Coupled Electron Microscopy

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) form intracellular chain-assembled nanocrystals of magnetite or greigite termed magnetosomes. The characterization of magnetosome crystals requires electron microscopy due to their nanoscopic sizes. However, electron microscopy does not provide phylogenetic information for MTB. We have developed a strategy for the simultaneous and rapid phylogenetic and biomineralog...

Uncultivated magnetotactic cocci from yuandadu park in beijing, china.

In the present study, we investigated a group of uncultivated magnetotactic cocci, which was magnetically isolated from a freshwater pond in Beijing, China. Light and transmission electron microscopy showed that these cocci ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 microm and contained two to four chains of magnetite magnetosomes, which sometimes were partially disorganized. Overall, the size of the disorganized ...

A Comparison between Chemical Synthesis Magnetite Nanoparticles and Biosynthesis Magnetite

The preparation of Fe3O4 from ferrous salt by air in alkaline aqueous solution at various temperatures was proposed. The synthetic magnetites have different particle size distributions. We studied the properties of the magnetite prepared by chemical methods compared with magnetotactic bacterial nanoparticles. The results show that crystallite size, morphology, and particle size distribution of ...
